Washington State Historical Society : The 1904 Wreck of the S.S. Clallam

January 18 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

FREE

Join presenter Erik Kosick and Washington State Historical Society for January’s Scholarly Selections to learn about the 1904 sinking of the SS Clallam.

The 6-month-old steamship Clallam sank in the Strait of Juan de Fuca 120 years ago, resulting in the deaths of at least 56 people. The aftermath was one of the largest scandals in Washington State and British Columbia and led to sweeping reforms on both sides of the border.

Erik Kosick has been researching the Clallam tragedy for over a decade and will take you through the steamship’s short life, including its final voyage. Through rarely seen photographs, artifacts, and stories of the Clallam’s passengers and crew, return to 1904 to see how this nearly forgotten shipwreck dramatically altered the Pacific Northwest’s maritime industry.
