Tacoma Tree Foundation invites you to join Joey Hulbert, a postdoctoral researcher at the WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center, for a Maple Tree Health and Community Science Walk and Happy Hour September 14th from 5-6:30PM at Franklin Park.
Joey Hulbert is a postdoctoral researcher at the WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center who lives in Tacoma and directs the Forest Health Watch program and leads the WSU Ravenholt Urban Forest Health Lab in projects that explore relationships between tree health, urban heat and pollution.
We will spend 1 hour in Franklin Park visiting various maple trees and learning to distinguish and identify maple tree species. Participants will also learn to recognize sooty bark disease on red maple and big leaf maple trees. We will also demonstrate how to add observations to the Maple Health Watch project on iNaturalist. Then we will walk to two maple tree lined neighborhoods on the way to Beer Star.
During the walk we will see a street lined with healthy maple trees and a street lined with unhealthy maple trees. Participants are welcome to stay for further discussion over a beverage at Beer Star.
If driving, we recommend parking near Beer Star then walking to Franklin Park because we will end the walk at Beer Star.
