Earthwise & Second Use: Salvage Stories

January 21, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Free

The City of Tacoma Historic Preservation Office presents Virtual Heritage Cafe: Broadening Horizons in Historic Preservation. Co-sponsored by Tacoma Historical Society and Historic Tacoma.

Second Use Building Materials has been reclaiming building materials for reuse in the Puget Sound region since 1994, and opened its retail store in Tacoma in 2017. They salvage materials and their stories, from the community, to the community. Our goal is to make salvage and reuse intuitive, accessible, and fun. In their presentation, they will discuss the symbiotic relationship between the goals of preservationists and waste reduction advocates, as well as show and tell their historic finds in Tacoma from the past year.
Amanda Harryman will present for Second Use. She has been their Outreach Coordinator for a year and loves her job of telling the stories behind the materials that pass through Second Use.

Aaron, Earthwise Director of Operations, will be speaking about salvage and adaptive reuse regarding two Tacoma projects: The Washington Building and Stewart Middle School.
