Ballet Folklórico and World Drumming at Northwest Folklife Festival

May 25, 2018 @ 3:00 pm - 3:30 pm

See students from Roosevelt Elementary and First Creek Middle School’s Ballet Folklórico and World Drumming programs perform at the Northwest Folklife Festival! In a partnership between Tacoma Public Schools and the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, young people in East Tacoma study Mexican folkloric dance and drumming traditions from around the globe. On Friday, May 25th they will share their skills at our region signature arts festival. Come out to support Tacoma students in this free event from 4:00-4:30pm at the Mural Amphitheater at Seattle Center!

Did you know that Tacoma is one of the few districts in the Northwest with a year-round Ballet Folklórico program? Currently serving students at Roosevelt Elementary and First Creek Middle School, the program is presented in partnership with the Broadway Center. Youth learn new skills even as they better understand cultural heritage and gain confidence through performances.

“First of all, this program allows students to learn something. It’s a great activity. Secondly, students of other cultures are invited to participate. This is something that I like a lot. It’s a unified community and that’s something that is very pleasing.” – Gonzalo Pérez, Tacoma parent
