About the Fund for Women & Girls
Vision – Women & Girls Are Empowered To Achieve Their Dreams Mission – To empower Pierce County women and girls through philanthropy
Founded in late 1999, the Fund for Women & Girls recognized a need in our community to support organizations that specifically benefit women and girls. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by a number of circumstances that limit their ability to participate fully and effectively in the life of their communities. Among our specific concerns: access to health care, domestic violence and abuse, limited educational and employment opportunities, and inadequate financial resources. In June of 2007, the FFW&G reached our first initial financial goal if raising $1 million in endowment. At this watershed moment, the Women’s Funding Alliance released a four county study on the state of women and girls (A Closer Look www.wfalliance.org/Stories/acloserlook). The FFW&G decided that we want to use this data as the lens by which to view and inform our 2009 grantmaking.
The FFW&G has begun to transition our work to become a subject matter expert of the needs of women and girls in Pierce County. Currently, we are in the middle of a strategic planning process to establish goals for the next 3-5 years. We hope to positively impact women and girls in Pierce County by:
Through convening agencies, women and girls, grantmakers, and other specific populations we want to listen to community needs and identify opportunities for collaboration. We hope to also learn first hand about emerging programs and projects worthy of support.
Collaboration We know that there is power and synergy in collaboration. We want to initiate and participate - and we want to foster and encourage collaborations among individuals and organizations.
We are exploring different ways of helping organizations build capacity. Ideas include: focusing on entrepreneurial granting; providing seed money for organizations; allocating larger grants to fewer projects, programs, and organizations. Additionally, the FFW&G will be looking at narrowing to a few focus areas for funding. We will continue to fund operating support to enhance the effectiveness of existing organizations. Finally, we will look at possibly grantmaking for collaborative projects – with several organizations/agencies involved.
The FFW&G is a component fund of The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation. As a fund, we do not have any programs or direct services. The governing structure of the FFW&G is an advisory board that acts in a similar manner and function to a board of directors. Currently, we have 18 board members who participate on at least one of eight sub-committees (fundraising, events, grants, education and outreach, strategic planning, budgeting, and nomination).
