The Philanthropic News from The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation February 2010
From the President of the Community Foundation, Rose Lincoln Hamilton
Every year when the Spring season comes, it is easy to recognize all of the beautiful surroundings that Pierce County offers. There are many things nature has provided us whether it's the view of water, the mountains, gardens, trees, or locally produced food. It also brings attention to the importance of keeping the nature around us fresh and sustainable. One of our five elements of a Vibrant Community is the Environment. We believe a healthy community has deep appreciation for the natural environment. In this month's e-newsletter, we highlight a few programs in Pierce County that allow us to support our local environment and eat healthy. We highlight the local Farmers Markets in Pierce County, the Consumer Supported Agriculture (CSA) baskets, as well as local gardens. Through our Vibrant Community Grantmaking we fund programs that foster "access to and meaningful connection with the environment" and "educational efforts that build attitudes and behaviors of environmental stewardship." If you would like to support Pierce County nonprofit organizations that meet these standards, there are three ways you can get involved: * If you are currently a donor advised fundholder, you can make a gift from your fund to the Vibrant Community's Environmental Grantmaking Program. * You can create a Field of Interest Fund which directly supports the environment with grants being made through our Vibrant Community's Environmental Grantmaking Program. *Finally, you can make a one-time gift to the Vibrant Community's Environmental Grantmaking Program. If you would like more information on supporting the environment through the Community Foundation, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Rose Lincoln Hamilton
